History of karachi in english

karachi city

At the time of Pakistan's independence in 1947, Karachi was selected as the capital of the fledgling state. Later, Islamabad was given the status of the capital of Pakistan.

The history of Karachi began with the Greek and Arab periods. The Arabs knew this area as port ‘’Debal’’.Debal was the place from where Muhammad bin Qasim began his conquests in 1770.

According to British historian Eliot, some areas of Karachi and the islands of Manora were included in Debal. In 1772, the village of Kolachi Jo Goth was chosen as a port for trade with Muscat and Bahrain. Because of this reason, this village begins turning into a trade center. Karachi was part of ‘’Kalat ‘’ sovereignty till 1775. That year war broke out between the rulers of Sindh and Khan Kalat. As a consequence, the Sindh government conquered Karachi.

This was followed by the success of the city’s port which became the trade center of a much larger country, which eventually resulted in growth in the population of Karachi. While, this development attracted people of many classes to Karachi, the eyes of the British were also raised toward the city.

Subsequently, the British attacked Karachi on February 3, 1837, and occupied it. After three years, the city was annexed to British India and given the status of a district.

Then in 1876, the founder of Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah was born in Karachi. By then Karachi had become a developed city. This development was dependent on the city's railway station and port. Karachi gradually became a commercial hub around a major port. In 1880, Karachi gets connected to the rest of India by a railway line. In 1899, Karachi became the largest wheat importer in the world of the East.

Afterward, Karachi was made the capital of Pakistan after its independence in 1947. At that time, the population of Karachi was approximately four hundred thousand (4 lacs). However, due to its new status, the population of the city increased quite rapidly and thus the city became the center of all its forts.

Karachi was the capital of Pakistan from 1947 to 1953. Then due to Karachi’s rapidly growing population and economy, it was thought of shifting the capital to another city.

In 1958, President Ayub Khan inaugurated development at Islamabad, a place near Rawalpindi. And then in 1968, the capital was shifted to Islamabad. Karachi is still Pakistan’s largest city and a busy industrial and commercial center.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Karachi was a victim of violence, political, and social unrest, and terrorism. In today's decade, the law and order situation in Karachi has improved a bit. But still, some enemies and miscreants seem to be obstructing the development of Karachi.

However, development work in Karachi is going on very fast and at the same time, Karachi is also emerging as a global hub.

Recently, the charisma of this city has been greatly affected by target killings. Karachi, which was famous as a ‘’City of Lights’’ now has been troubled by unemployment, and load shedding.
